BROWN EGG LAYERS

The double-laced partridge pattern of the rare breed Barnvelder is truly a sight to behold. This showy bird is a beautiful bronze on iridescent greenish-black lacing on reddish-brown colored feathers. Developed in the town of Barneveld, Holland and known to be good layers of dark brown eggs. Very rare in the United States which makes them quite desirable and highly sought after. They are slow to mature but make a good dual purpose breed.

Average mature weight:
Roosters 7 lbs., Hens 6 lbs.

Marans originated in western France in a town by the same name and are known for one thing- their dark brown eggs. Black Copper Marans eggs are even darker than other Marans breeds. As with all dark brown egg layers, the eggs are the darkest at the beginning of the laying cycle. The eggs will lighten slightly then return to darkest color after a period of rest. Black Copper Marans do well on free range as they do not cause as much damage through heavy scratching. These feathered legged birds are fast growers and make a good duel purpose breed. Our breeders originated from Bev Davis and Wade Jeane lines.

Average mature weight:
Roosters 8 1/2 lbs., Hens 7 lbs.

RHODE ISLAND RED

Rhode Island Red Chickens One of the most popular breeds in the world

Brown egg Layer

Buff Orpingtons, which have rich golden buff plumage are a popular brown egg dual-purpose variety and are sometimes called "Big Buffs". Because they are loosely feathered, they appear to be much heavier than their true weights. The feathers are broad and smooth fitting on the deep body of this breed. They have a quiet disposition, make excellent mothers and are one of the most broody of all standard breeds. They have white skin, which is an appearance disadvantage when fowl meat is produced.

Black Australorp

Black Australorps are one of the most popular producers of large brown eggs and they are known for persistency of lay even in hot weather. The green sheen of this solid black plumage bird presents a truly beautiful sight, particularly when the sun is reflecting off the plumage.

NEW HAMPSHIRE RED

New Hampshire Reds are similar to the Rhode Island Reds, which were used in their development. However, these are a lighter buff-red-color than the Rhode Islands, and are selected for earlier maturing and large brown eggs. New Hampshires are valued for crossing with other breeds to develop laying flocks. Hens are deep-bodied birds.

Average mature weight:
Roosters 8 1/2 lbs., Hens 6 1/2 lbs.
